'No Islamisation Agenda' Adeosun Replies CAN

The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, has advised Nigerians to disregard the allegation by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) that the N100 billion Sukuk bond recently offered by the federal government was meant to Islamise the country.

Adeosun said this in an interview with journalists on the sidelines of an investors’ conference organised by Stanbic IBTC in Lagos at the weekend.
According to her, the bond offering which closed last Friday, was issued to raise funds for infrastructure development.
Adeosun said the government had identified projects the funds raised would be deployed to.
She explained: “So, there is no religious driver behind it. It is really a financial product to meet the financial needs. This particular one of N100 billion is going to be used for road projects.
“We have identified the road projects that it is going to be tied to and there is no religious attachment to it. South Africa even did a sovereign Sukuk before Nigeria. So, there is no Islamisation agenda at all.”
The minister stressed that the Sukuk was part of the government’s programme to deepen the financial market.
Furthermore, Adeosun disclosed that the framework for the debt instrument predated the present government.
“The committee started work in 2011. So, they have been working on it for six years, to structure products that would be compliant. Really, the Sukuk is about two things -one it is about raising money and deepening the financial market.

“I’m greatly honoured to be joined by leaders of Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Namibia, Senegal, Uganda and South Africa. In particular, I want to thank President Condé, who is representing the African Union”, he said.

“In this room, I see partners for promoting prosperity and peace on a range of economic, humanitarian and security issues.

“We hope to extend our economic partnerships with countries who are committed to self-reliance and to fostering opportunities for job creation in both Africa and the United States.

“Africa has tremendous business potential. I have so many friends going to your countries, trying to get rich. I congratulate you.

“They’re spending a lot of money. But it does – it has tremendous business potential and representing huge amounts of different markets. And for American firms it’s really become a place that they have to go – that they want to go.

“Six of the world’s ten fastest-growing economies are in Africa. Increasing American trade and investment across diverse industries – including agriculture, energy, transportation, healthcare, travel, and tourism – will further transform lives throughout the continent”, the American president stated.

He added, “Africa, I have to say, is a continent of tremendous potential. The outlook is bright. I look forward to hearing from you and your advice during the meal”.

Trump said he was eager to know more African leaders closely, saying, “I really want to congratulate you – growing very fast economically and in every other way. You’ve done a terrific job, you’ve had some tremendous obstacles placed in your path, but you have done really an absolutely incredible job.”

The US president pledged that his country would partner with African countries and organisations, like the African Union, in leading successful efforts to end violence, prevent the spread of terrorism, as well as respond to humanitarian crises.

Maria and Consolata Mwakikuti, 20, who are joined at the abdomen, have become minor celebrities in the east African nation where the media have closely followed their path through high school and arrival at university earlier this month.

Mwazarau Mathola, spokeswoman for the Ruaha Catholic University in Iringa in the centre of the country, said on Thursday the women arrived a few weeks before classes start in October to get used to their new life and take computer lessons.

“A separate house has been provided for them, furnished and set up for their needs, because they can’t be housed in normal student accommodation,” said Mathola.

A couch has been installed in their classroom to allow them to sit comfortably, and they have a carer.

The twins were abandoned by their mother after the death of their father, and later taken in by a Catholic mission. They will study education, with the hope of becoming teachers of history, English and Swahili, said Mathola.

In July, Maria made an emotional call on state television for parents not to “hide or lock up their handicapped children”.

“They must know they human beings, handicapped or not, are equal and have the same rights,” she said.

The sisters, who enjoy knitting and cooking together, thanked the teachers who helped them through highschool, as well as the government who provided a vehicle to take them from their home to school each day.

“We didn’t expect this day to come, it is by the grace of God that we are here today,” said Consolata, the chattier of the two.

The sisters admit that they do not always get along, as Consolata told a local newspaper in 2015: “For example when I want to do laundry and Maria prefers to read. However we always find a way around it.”

Former president Jonathan speaks about the unrest in the Southeast Nigeria

Following the uprising in the South East and other parts of Nigeria as a result of the agitation for Biafra, the immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan has counseled President Muhammadu Buhari to summon a Council of State meeting.

The former president said Buhari should summon the counsel of State so as to advise him on how to handle the current crisis across the country.

Jonathan made the remark while condemning the burning of a police station by some persons believed to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

On a post on his Facebook, Jonathan also condemned the threat to human life by several elements across the country.

Calling for dialogue among Nigerians, he urged indigenes to continue to show love to one another as this was the only way to ensure the continued existence of the country.

He wrote: “The reports I have received about recent developments in the country lead me to appeal to all men of good will to use whatever influence they have to push for peaceful coexistence and restraint on all sides.

“Perhaps it is time for the Council of State to intervene and offer its wise counsel. Irrespective of whatever provocation, Nigerians must never turn on each other.

“Even in the face of difficult circumstances, we must have faith that God in His infinite wisdom will guide us to finding a way out that is fair and just to all concerned.

“Inasmuch as there may be the need to enforce order, there is a greater need to reinforce our humanity and treat Nigerian citizens humanely whether they are from the North or South.

“Nothing justifies the desecration and destruction of religious places of worship or a police station. But even more so, nothing justifies the endangering of human life. Let us exchange ideas instead of exchanging insults and threats.”

Jonathan’s call is coming at a time when there is so much tension in the South East which has spread to other regions of the country.

The tension has been fuelled by the deployment of military under the code name, Operation Python Dance II.

Tensions escalate between USA and North Korea after threats to US overseas territory of Guam. Any conflict would cause major economic problems both in Korea and more widely across the globe. Global supply chains could be severely impacted. US debt levels could spike as a result of any conflict. Tensions between the USA and North Korea escalated further on Tuesday evening when President Donald Trump promised "fire and fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before"in response to recent threats from North Korea and its leader Kim Jong Un. Hours later, North Korea responded by saying it is seriously considering a missile strike on the Pacific island of Guam, home to a US military base.

  • A change to the underlying blockchain technology called a "Segregated Witness" or SegWit is being implemented on Tuesday which is seen as a key milestone for bitcoin's future.
  • The SegWit will help solve the long transaction times on the bitcoin network.

The bitcoin community appears to have resolved the in fighting over the future of the cryptocurrency.
broke through the $3,500 mark for the first time on Tuesday hitting a fresh record high as uncertainty over the future of the cryptocurrency subsided.
The digital currency hit an-all time high of $3,525.04 before pulling back to around $3,481 early on Tuesday.
Bitcoin's record high marks a 264 percent year-to-date rise and comes after months of infighting in the cryptocurrency world.
Within the bitcoin community, a so-called . There is a big backlog of transactions on the bitcoin blockchain — the technology that underpins the cryptocurrency.
The debate was over the way in which the capacity of the blockchain could be increased to speed up the capability of the bitcoin network. Major infighting within the community took place which led to two separate proposals on how to expand the blockchain.
Because of the two separate proposals, a "fork" took place which split the blockchain at the end of July. A new digital currency called . Bitcoin Cash's market cap is just under a tenth of bitcoin's.
The majority of the community backed a software upgrade called BIP 91, which would introduce something known as SegWit2X to the blockchain. SegWit is short for "segregated witness" which would move some of the data outside the main bitcoin network to increase its capacity. This was received negatively by some miners because it would lead to fewer fees for them.
But  which would increase the block size and the SegWit is set to be implemented today.
"Segwit activates this afternoon and there is a lot of hope that the network will unclog with lower transaction fees becoming the new normal," Charles Hayter, CEO of London-based digital currency data firm CryptoCompare.
"The SegWit activation opens up projects that bring some capability to the bitcoin network. Instead of bitcoin being held back by infighting, it is now blue skies of opportunity in what can be built."
Once the SegWit is locked in on Tuesday, there will be a two-week grace period to allow miners to upgrade their software. But the feeling is that the worst of the fighting is over.
At the same time, more regulators are continuing to make positive noises around the digital currency. In Switzerland for example, the financial market regulator gave Zurich-based Falcon Private Bank  on managing assets based on the blockchain technology behind bitcoin and other digital currencies.
All of these factors are likely to push the price of bitcoin higher this year, experts said.
"Given the technology's move towards scalability, more institutional investors are now considering to allocate funds to bitcoin, which may be exciting the market," Aurelien Menant, CEO of the Gatecoin cryptocurrency exchange.

Bitcoin can be an asset but not a currency, says China central bank adviser - CNBC

Virtual currencies like  are assets but bitcoin in itself does not have the fundamental attributes needed to be a currency that could meet modern economic development needs, a Chinese central bank adviser said.

Sheng Songcheng, adviser to the  (PBOC), made the comments in an interview with financial magazine Yicai published late Thursday.

"Bitcoin does not have the fundamental attributes needed to be a currency as it is a string of code generated by complex algorithms...But I do not deny that virtual currencies have technical value and are a type of asset," he said.
His comments come after the  earlier this year, a move that prompted the companies to stop margin lending, introduced trading fees and issue rules to rein in users.
Many governments around the world are still mulling how to regulate and classify bitcoin, whose value surged in June to hit a record just shy of $3,000. China has classified it as a "virtual good".
Squaring in on bitcoin, Sheng said expectations that bitcoin supply would be capped in the year 2140 would make it difficult for it to become a medium of exchange that could meet modern economic development needs as money supply should be related to economic needs.
He also said that Chinese monetary authorities should study issuing a central bank virtual currency that it could regulate and run properly.
